Breaking: k6 2.0 Now Generally Available—AI-Assisted Testing and New Assertions API Lead the Release
Grafana Labs today announced the general availability of k6 2.0, a major update to the open-source performance testing tool. The release introduces AI-assisted testing workflows, a new Assertions API, broader Playwright compatibility in the browser module, and several CLI extensions designed to accelerate validation in modern software development pipelines.
“k6 2.0 is a direct response to how teams are now building software—faster, with AI coding assistants, and with tighter feedback loops,” said John Doe, product lead for k6 at Grafana Labs. “We’re making it easier for both humans and automated agents to author, validate, and scale performance tests.”

Background
k6 emerged as a lightweight, developer-friendly performance testing tool, quickly gaining over 30,000 stars on GitHub. The 1.0 release last year brought TypeScript support, native extensions, and production-grade stability. k6 2.0 builds on that foundation to address the growing complexity of accelerated software delivery cycles driven by AI code generation.
The new k6 x agent command sets up all necessary configuration and references for AI coding assistants, while k6 x mcp exposes k6 through the Model Context Protocol, enabling agents to validate, run, and iterate on tests without manual intervention. “We designed these features so that testing keeps pace with code generation,” said Doe.
What This Means
For engineering teams adopting AI assistants, k6 2.0 lowers the barrier to embedding performance testing early in the development lifecycle. Instead of being a post-deployment afterthought, performance validation can now be automated and triggered by agents writing tests alongside application code.
