Breaking: Dart Developers Gain Full-Stack Power with Firebase Functions Preview
Google Cloud Next 2026 in Las Vegas drew over 30,000 attendees, and the Flutter and Dart team delivered a game-changing announcement: a preview of Dart support for Firebase Functions. This means developers can now use Dart for both frontend and backend development, a first for the ecosystem.
“This eliminates the need to switch languages between client and server code,” said Kevin Moore, a Dart product manager. “It’s a major step toward a unified Dart development experience.” The team also unveiled deeper integrations with the Dart Admin SDK, reducing context switching and accelerating development velocity.
Full-Stack Dart Takes Center Stage
The preview enables Dart code to run directly in Firebase Functions, allowing developers to build cloud functions using the same language they use for Flutter apps. The announcement was backed by a dedicated breakout session at Next, with a full recording promised for Google I/O.
“We’re moving beyond ‘Flutter for frontend only’,” added Rody Davis, a Dart engineer. “Full-stack Dart is now a reality.” The team expects the feature to reach general availability later this year.
On-Site Experiences Showcase Flutter’s AI and Agentic Capabilities
GenLatte: AI-Powered Coffee Shop
In the center of the expo, the team built GenLatte—a specialty coffee shop powered by Flutter’s GenUI framework. Attendees used a Flutter app to order drinks, and baristas created lattes with custom foam art generated by Google’s nanobanana AI.
The booth was a hit, with long lines of developers eager to see GenUI in action. “This shows how Flutter can create dynamic, AI-driven user interfaces on the fly,” said Andrew Brogdon, a Flutter engineer.
Agentic Mobile & Web Demos
The expo floor featured three standout demos: Full-Stack Dart, GenUI, and a special appearance by Very Good Ventures (VGV). The Partiful app demonstrated UI generated in real-time, while Firebase Functions for Dart was shown live. The Builder Hub served as a community home base, with dedicated booths for Flutter, Firebase, and Go.
Key Sessions and Customer Stories
Developer Keynote: Agents and Flutter
Emma Twersky hosted the Developer keynote, emphasizing Flutter’s role in Google Cloud’s bet on AI agents. “Flutter is not just about mobile apps anymore—it’s about building intelligent, agentic experiences,” she said. Richard Seroter joined to demonstrate how agents can leverage Flutter’s UI capabilities.
Toyota and Talabat: Enterprise Success
Abdallah Shaban shared the stage with Toyota and Talabat executives. Toyota revealed plans to use Flutter for next-generation infotainment systems, revolutionizing in-car UX. Talabat showed how Flutter enables rapid innovation and scaling across the Middle East. “These are real-world examples of Flutter driving business transformation,” Shaban noted.
Deep Dives into GenUI and Full-Stack Dart
Yegor Jbanov and Andrew Brogdon led a session on Generative UI, moving beyond text chatbots to allow agents to create their own interfaces. The session will be available on the Flutter YouTube channel after Google I/O. Meanwhile, Rody Davis and Kevin Moore’s full-stack Dart session drew a packed room.
Background
Until now, Dart was primarily used for client-side Flutter apps, while Firebase Functions required JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python. This preview closes the gap, enabling a unified development stack. The move positions Dart as a serious contender for full-stack cloud development.
What This Means
For the 2 million+ Flutter developers, the announcement reduces cognitive overhead and speeds up prototyping. Full-stack Dart also opens doors for new startups and enterprises to adopt a single-language ecosystem. As Google Cloud Next 2026 wraps up, the Flutter community leaves with a clear message: the future is Dart from frontend to cloud.
